In a momentous shift in Indian cricket, Rohit Sharma’s captaincy of the One Day International (ODI) side has officially come to an end, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) replacing him with the young and dynamic Shubman Gill. The announcement came as part of India’s squad reveal for the upcoming Australia tour, comprising three ODIs followed by five T20 Internationals. Though Rohit and veteran Virat Kohli are still included in the squad as specialist batters, leadership of the 50-over format now lies with Gill.
Gill, who earlier this year took over as India’s Test captain, will now helm the ODI unit, becoming the first Indian to lead in two formats simultaneously. The decision marks a generational handover in Indian cricket, as selectors aim to build continuity ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Rohit’s captaincy legacy
Rohit Sharma, now aged 38, first assumed full-time ODI captaincy in December 2021, after Virat Kohli stepped down from leading the shorter formats. His tenure was marked with steady success: India lifted two Asia Cup titles, reached the final of the 2023 World Cup, and most recently, clinched the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy on foreign soil. In that Champions Trophy final, Rohit scored 76 and was named Player of the Match as India defeated New Zealand.
By the time of his stepping down, Rohit had captained India in 56 ODIs, securing 42 wins and enduring 12 losses, giving him a commendable winning percentage of around 75%. His stint may be shorter than legends like MS Dhoni or Kohli, but the impact and trophy cupboard he built leave a significant mark.
Gill’s steady rise to leadership
Shubman Gill’s ascension has been meteoric. Over the past two years, he has evolved from a promising prodigy into one of India’s most dependable batters. In 2023, Gill finished as the top ODI run-scorer, amassing over 1,400 runs, including five centuries. His calm demeanor, sharp tactical awareness, and rapport with the younger core of players made him an ideal choice to succeed Rohit Sharma.
Speaking after his appointment, Gill expressed gratitude toward his predecessor- Rohit bhai has been an incredible leader and mentor. I’ve learned so much from him about patience, handling pressure, and leading by example. This responsibility is a huge honor, and I’ll do my best to carry forward his legacy,” he said in a statement shared by the BCCI.
