At least eight people were killed and 24 others injured after a car explosion took place near the Red Fort Metro Station in Delhi on Monday evening. The powerful blast, which occurred near Gate Number 1 of the station, also sparked a fire that spread to three or four nearby vehicles, officials said.

According to the Delhi Fire Department, several people were trapped in the area following the explosion. Seven fire tenders were rushed to the spot, and firefighters managed to bring the flames under control by around 7:30 pm. The cause of the explosion is yet to be determined, and authorities have not ruled out any possibilities.

The injured were taken to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital, where doctors confirmed that eight people were declared dead on arrival. “Three patients are in critical condition, while one is stable,” said the hospital’s Medical Superintendent.

Following the incident, a high alert was issued across the national capital. The Delhi Police Special Cell and forensic teams have cordoned off the area and are examining the damaged vehicles and debris for evidence. Sniffer dogs and bomb disposal squads were also deployed to ensure there were no additional explosive materials in the vicinity.

Senior police and security officials visited the site soon after the explosion. “It is too early to say anything about the cause. The investigation is underway,” a Delhi Police officer told reporters. Kishor Prasad, DIG of the CRPF, also said he was heading to the scene for an assessment.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer A.K. Malik told ANI that the first call was received around 7 pm, reporting a car blast near Chandni Chowk Metro Station. “Seven fire units were dispatched immediately. The fire was contained by 7:29 pm. There are casualties, and our teams are working with the police to assess the situation,” he said.

Officials said the priority now is to ensure the safety of people in the area and identify the cause of the explosion. The investigation continues.
