Karnataka caps movie ticket prices at Rs 200
In a major relief for both moviegoers and exhibitors, the Karnataka government has officially capped cinema ticket prices across the State at Rs 200, excluding taxes. The new rule applies to all cinemas, including multiplexes, and for films in all languages.
However, the cap will not cover multiplex screens with premium facilities and seating capacity of 75 or fewer. The regulation was introduced through the Karnataka Cinemas (Regulation) (Amendment) Rules, 2025.
Bengaluru authorities act after viral footpath video
A video posted by Canadian national Caleb Friesen showing the poor condition of Bengaluru’s footpaths recently went viral, sparking widespread debate. Responding swiftly, the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) launched a clean-up drive.
The GBA confirmed that the Majestic area highlighted in the video was cleared, ensuring safer and more walkable pedestrian spaces. Sharing details on X, the authority stated that “intensive cleaning” was carried out to restore footpaths and improve accessibility for residents and visitors alike.
Annual metro fare hikes likely in Bengaluru
After a steep fare hike of up to 71% in February 2025, Bengaluru’s Namma Metro may see annual increases in ticket prices. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL), which had raised fares to a minimum of Rs 10 and a maximum of Rs 90 earlier this year, is now considering the recommendation of the Fare Fixation Committee (FFC).
The committee has suggested a 5% automatic annual fare hike until the next FFC is formed, to ensure financial sustainability. If adopted, the next increase will come in February 2026, making commuting costlier for daily passengers.
Metro station renaming row
A new controversy has emerged over Karnataka’s plan to rename an upcoming Metro station near Shivajinagar after St Mary. Maharashtra deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis criticized the move, calling it an insult to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Responding to the remarks, Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah said Fadnavis should raise his objections with the Union government. “We will send our recommendation to the Centre; let him speak to them,” Siddaramaiah told media.
Two senior IPS officers elevated to DGP rank
The Karnataka government has promoted two IPS officers from the 1995 batch to the rank of director general of police (DGP). Umesh Kumar, who was serving as additional director general of police (ADGP) in the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP), has been appointed as DGP (recruitment).
Arun Chakravarthy J, ADGP and chairman-cum-managing director of the Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation, was also elevated to DGP rank and will continue in his current role.
