The death of 32-year-old Telangana techie Mohammed Nizamuddin from Telangana in Santa Clara, California, has triggered shock, controversy, and grief.

While police described him as an armed aggressor who ignored warnings, his family alleged a hasty response and racial harassment at work. The incident, which began with a petty quarrel over an air-conditioner, has left unanswered questions for both his loved ones and the Indian community.

Who was Nizamuddin: A 32-year-old from Mahabubnagar, Telangana, Nizamuddin moved to the US in 2016 for higher studies, later working as a software professional in California.

The incident: On September 3, Santa Clara police responded to a 911 call reporting a stabbing at his residence after a fight between roommates over an air-conditioner.

Police account: Officers claimed they found Nizamuddin armed with a knife and threatening to attack again, leading them to shoot him. Two knives were recovered from the scene.

Victim’s condition: His roommate, who was stabbed during the fight, was hospitalised with injuries.

Police defence: Chief Cory Morgan said the officer’s quick action “prevented further harm and likely saved at least one life.”

Family’s allegation: Nizamuddin’s relatives said the shooting was “too quick” and no proper inquiry was carried out before police opened fire.

Delayed information: His father, Mohammed Hasanuddin, said the family only learned of the death two weeks later, on September 18, through a friend.

Workplace grievances: Nizamuddin had earlier posted on LinkedIn alleging racial harassment, wage fraud, wrongful termination, and obstruction of justice at his workplace.

Family’s plea: His father, a retired teacher, wrote to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar seeking help to bring back his son’s body for last rites.

Government response: The Indian consulate in San Francisco expressed condolences, confirmed contact with local authorities, and assured full consular support to the grieving family.
