Elphinstone Bridge demolition begins
Demolition of the more-than-century-old Elphinstone Road Over Bridge (ROB), a vital east-west connector in central Mumbai, has begun. The British-era structure linked the busy Parel and Prabhadevi areas and was considered one of the city’s most important commuter routes.
The Mumbai Traffic Police, anticipating disruptions, had issued a notification on Thursday, announcing the closure of the bridge and detailing an alternative traffic management plan to help ease congestion during reconstruction.
Uddhav Thackeray announces Sindoor Raksha Abhiyan
Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray has strongly criticised the central government’s decision to allow an India-Pakistan cricket match, calling it “sad and disturbing.” Blaming what he termed the Modi government’s “failed foreign policies,” Thackeray alleged that trade and revenue interests were being prioritised over nationalism.
At a press conference on Saturday, he announced the launch of a statewide protest, ‘Sindoor Raksha Abhiyan’, to be held on Sunday. The campaign will see women workers of the party participate in a “Har Gharse Sindoor” drive, sending boxes of sindoor (vermillion) to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in symbolic protest.
Onion farmers launch statewide protest
Onion growers in Maharashtra have begun a week-long agitation against collapsing market prices. Starting Friday, members of the Maharashtra State Onion Producers Farmers Association have adopted a novel method of protest, directly calling elected representatives.
Over the next seven days, ministers, MPs, and MLAs across the state will be flooded with calls from farmers demanding urgent intervention. Organisers said that unlike traditional rallies or sit-ins, this approach forces policymakers into one-on-one engagement with cultivators facing mounting financial losses. The agitation will continue until September 18.

Both Mumbai and neighbouring Thane district have been placed under a ‘yellow’ alert for two days starting Sunday, signalling the likelihood of heavy rainfall in isolated pockets.
